SRUTI Fellow Devendra and his wife Sudhi are running Manthan School, situated at a remote village Jhiri of Jhalawar District. The school was formally started on 23rd March 2001.
The school caters to the dropouts as well as fresh learners. Most of the children come from the backward communities in the area. The educational standard in the villages was very poor and the objective was to improve the educational levels in the area.
The school is being run on the lines of the Adharshila School. The total number of learners is 76 including 16 girls belonging to SC/OBC families. They are from 6 -16 yrs of age, learning in different groups. Four teachers are there to guide them. Teachers are from different background – one is doing M. A. in history, one is a MSW and other one is a graduate in Mechanical engineering. One day a week the children themselves run the school.
The children sit in various groups according to their age and level of understanding. A child is free to sit in different group of different subject according to his/her level of understanding and choice. The internal evaluation is carried out regularly by teachers and children themselves.
In 2005, 90% students appeared in the 10th examination has cleared the examination. Three successful students joined the Intermediate Schools. Four of them have been active with the school activities as facilitators.
