The school is situated in the North-western district of Badwani of Madhya Pradesh. This is a tribal area and the school is running learning processes with 140 tribal girls and boys.
Having worked in tribal areas for 20 years SRUTI fellows, Amit and Jayshree realised that tribal societies are in a transitional phase. Theys felt that the requirements of tribal children are somehow different from other children. To address the needs of the children of the region an innovative curriculum and learning process were developed.
Along with text-based education, the curriculum involves children in natural farming practices, handicrafts, theatre, subaltern art forms and peer group education. Elder children help the younger lot in enhancing their comprehension level. Some of the senior students teach students of lower classes. Project assignments are frequently used to enhance the involvement level of students. Some of the most outstanding projects are displayed during the School’s annual event, called as BAL MELA. Last year some other schools having similar approach towards education also participated in the Mela.

Finances for the school come mostly from individual donations and fee from the students. The school mobilises funds through sales of handicrafts and theatrical performances.

In 2005, 28 students sat for the 5th and 8th board exams. There were 10 first divisions and 17 distinctions in various subjects. The great thing is that no one failed in Maths and English - the biggest hurdle for rural students. The other great thing is that a 9th class student Kamal, popularly known as Kamal Sir, taught Maths. He has been with the learning centre for the past eight years.
