Established in 1983, SRUTI is a not-for-profit organisation based in New Delhi.

We support social activism across rural and urban India, through our Fellowship Programme.

We support community based issues, advocacy & capacity building process for social activists through our Advocacy & Learning Center.

We provide Disaster Response services to victims and survivors, of earthquake in Gujarat and Uttarkashi, of tsunami in South India and of cyclone in Orissa.

We Mobilise Resources through fund raising efforts such as melas (fairs), sale of handicrafts, paper products, scrap collections and donations.

SRUTI "Evolving through Experience"

SRUTI started with the intention of supporting individuals at the grassroots who had a burning desire and passion to contribute to social change and work amidst the deprived and exploited sections of society. Its vision was to invest in the idealism, energy and commitment of these young development workers and assist them in the initial stages of their work.

Over two decades later, today, SRUTI has established itself as a critical entity that supports social and development  action in India, thus impacting the lives of thousands of people, including marginalised women, men and children. It can be described as an intermediary organisation that facilitates, supports and strengthens grass root level initiatives across rural and urban India.

"Sruti, along with its fleet of vibrant and dedicated fellows,
stands out as an inimitable intervention in the midst of
enormous threats and challenges that the
social development field is faced with."

(Sruti Evalution report, by Vijaya Chauhan and Anil Chaudhary, 2003)

Team

SRUTI is staffed by 20 members, of which, two work as consultants. The roles of different team members are divided between the fellowship, advocacy, resource mobilisation programmes and day to day functions of administration and accounts. Consistent with our organizational style is a structure where hierarchies and designations while present, are underplayed. Rather than the conventional pyramid, the organizational structure is in the nature of a constellation, with the Executive Director acting as a nucleus and a cementing force. The team has a participative and consultative style of functioning. We lay stress on transparency and involvement of all members in organizational processes, including, participation in the executive board and general body meetings. The principles of openness and accessibility in all interactions are also reflected in the physical setting of the office. Here spaces flow into each other.
